Default Balancing Work and Life

Balancing Work and Life

Luke 10:38-42: “Martha…,” the Lord answered, “You are worried and upset about many things, but one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her” (vv.41-42).

Martha was the original servaholic. Although she was genuinely concerned with helping others, her serving controlled her. Her guests may have felt that she cared more about her good deeds than spending time with them.

Martha lived many years ago, yet, her workaholic lifestyle is prevalent today. Those of us who try hard to do and make everything around us just right are often distracted from the most important things in life.

Like Martha, we get dragged around by our work addiction, perfectionism, and people pleasing. If we cut the leash on our habitual doing and working, we can relax, like Mary, and learn to sit at Jesus’

It is at Jesus’ feet that we begin to understand who we are and how we can be the person God created us to be. In his presence we find help for dealing with life’s dilemmas and disappointments, and gain first hand knowledge of God’s unconditional love and acceptance.

Lord, I get so tired.
Sometimes life seems to control me, instead of me controlling it.
Please help me to balance my doing with quiet listening.

Joan C. Webb

We stay sober and clean together - one day at a time!
God says that each of us is worth loving.
