Generally Recovery Fellowships are the last resort. They would rather go into a mental hospital than go to AA, NA, Al-Anon, GA, OA, etc.
Why wait until Step 6 to address your issues? Why continue to act out in your disease until you absolutely have to. We become dry drunks, when we just put the plug in the jug. A sponsor keeps us focused and directed to where we need to go. They aren't suppose to do it for us, but they do have a shoulder to lean on, even if they don't carry us. This is a we program, and a sponsor was a "we" that I needed to put in my life, along with my home group members, and the many members who I got telephone #s. We have to take down the barriers and let go of the fear.
