Default Trusting When It’s Hard

Trusting When It’s Hard

Genesis 15:1-6: “‘Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward’” (v.1).

Sometimes it is difficult to understand the things that happen to us after we decide to trust God to help us change. We want to believe that God is working for the best in our lives, but we may see little clear-cut evidence.

For ten years Abram and Sarah saw no evidence of the fulfillment of God’s plan for them. God had promised them that their lives would change. God said Abram would be the father of a great group of people, yet, he and Sarah remained childless. As Abram contemplated adopting a servant as his heir, God reaffirmed his intentions. “Don’t worry, Abram. I’m your protection and your reward. You have a son.”

Like Abram, we can be assured that God will keep his promises to us. When we sincerely ask him to save us from our destructive thoughts and habits, and remain committed to the process, we need not be afraid. He is helping us, even when we do not understand or see the evidence. The change may not take place as rapidly as we wish it would, but it will happen. God is our shield; our assurance that change is possible. The God of Abraham is our reward. We can trust him.

Lord God, you’ve promised to help me

and I believe you.

I trust you even when it’s hard.

This reminds me of what I was told early in recovery. The world doesn't change, I do. I am given the tools to stay clean and sober each day, it is up to me to pick them up. Just sitting back and waiting for God to fix it, isn't His Plan. He gave us freedom of choice.

Life can be hard, really difficult at times, but the solution is there when we look and live it, instead of staying stuck in our problems.
