World’s Fastest Walkers
World’s Fastest Walkers
By Poh Fang Chia She had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His word. —Luke 10:39 According to a study measuring the pace of life of cities in 32 countries, people in the biggest hurry live here in Singapore. We walk 60 feet in 10:55 seconds, compared to 12:00 seconds for New Yorkers and 31:60 seconds for those living in the African city of Blantyre, Malawi. But regardless of where you live, the study shows that walking speeds have increased by an average of 10 percent in the past 20 years. And if walking speed is any indicator for the pace of life, we are certainly much busier than before. Are you caught up in the frenzy of a busy life? Pause and consider Jesus’ words to Martha: “You are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her” (Luke 10:41-42). Notice Jesus’ gentle words. He didn’t rebuke Martha for wanting to be a good host but rather reminded her about her priorities. Martha had allowed the necessary to get out of proportion. And, in the process, she was so busy doing good that she didn’t take time to sit at Jesus’ feet. In our drive to be productive for the Lord, let’s remember the one thing worth being concerned about—enjoying time with our Savior. Jesus longs for our fellowship even more than we long for His.

When I saw 'walkers,' I thought of mine. Many people say that people who use walkers fake it and just use them to beat the system so they can get free bus fare.
There is always someone who wants to beat the system and make it bad for others. Personally, I need mine to sit down on when my breathing gets bad. I wanted to walk to the mall today, but my breathing wouldn't have allowed me to ge t there. I have trouble just walking and carrying myself, let alone carrying a purse and my cane. I have learned to become creative and tie my purchases on, although I try not to go to the library the same day that I need to do a big grocery shop. Again, like all things, when I get needy, I get greedy, and want more. The mall is only 5 blocks from me, but coming home is all uphill. I try not to play the victim and martyr and walk home if it isn't good for me. I always pushed the envelope, tried to see how far I could go and get away with something, in recovery, I try to change that way of thinking and acting. Use to be busy for busy sake. Busy took me away from myself, and yes, I have to do service, but if I don't continue to work my own program, what I share is old news and becomes the past, and my recovery isn't present. I can tell you what I did, but I think it is important to share with you how I walk my walk and share the benefits of going to meetings, having a sponsor, working and applying the steps. I may have been around for a few 24 hours, but all I have is today. That only means that I have had a few more 24 hours of practice than you have, and I am still trying to get it right. I did recover from that hopeless state of mind and body, but I never lost my disease, it is just waiting for me to slip. I don't have to physically pick up to relapse. There are a few days when I have to take me around the block a few times, so my mind catches up with my body. Other times, the mind is willing and the flesh is weak.
