Hi, My name is Pat and I am an addict. I have been in recovery since January 1989.
July 4, 1989 is my clean date/soberity. I call it Dependence Day! Those little paradoxes.
I read the dailies in past years, but this is my first post.

Welcome John James, glad you made the decision to join us. I learned by pushing the wrong buttons. I found that if I clicked on a heading, i.e. AA, NA, Inspirations, it displayed the different topics for discussion. If you click on the last post on the right side of the forum, you will see the last post made.

If you want to start a topic, click on New Thread. To response to a post, no matter how long ago it was posted, use post reply or use the quick reply.

There is a search engine, and you can put in a topic you want to read about, type it in the box and press go and it will bring up all the topics posted on that subject.

Not much of a techie, perhaps someone else can give you further direction.

Welcome Kurtwells, so grateful to have you join us. Not too much posted here yet on Nar-Anon, what is here is mostly posted in General Recovery, for the Newcomers, and Recovery Topics. Al-Anon posts are here, and alcohol is a drug also, so hopefully you will find something there that will help you deal with the emotions of living with an addict. It is a family disease.

Thank you so much for sharing.

Hi! My name is Virginia and I'm an alcoholic. Its 3:30 am now and I'm up with my fibromyalgia pain. I have 12 days sober. Last week was spent in the hospital detoxing. I'm reading lots of helpful books and recovery apps on my Kindle and phone. Any suggestions for any good apps to help me in my recovery. Everything is changing and I get overwhelmed sometimes - especially when I can't. Sleep. I've been reading the daily readings on this site and its very helpful and wonderful!

We do this one day at a time, congratulations on your 12 days. As was told, bring the body, and the mind will follow.

Welcome Randy, congratulations on 10 months. You have many months ahead of you if you stay clean and sober. I once heard, if your wife goes to Al-Anon, that there is your program, her program, and our program. It makes for a strong foundation. Al-Anon isn't about talking about you, it is about her looking at her.

When you get to Step 12, you start again at Step One, because you have more awareness and understanding, that is how you grow and heal.

Welcome! Don't let a relapse work on your head. Go back to what worked and keep on the path. All sober time is good time and the best of us make mistakes. I try to burn into my memory how bad my last relapse was, how I ruined my own vacation and never want to do that again. I practice doing it right in my head and will use the tools God gave me to prevent it from happening again.

Each day is a new day! One day at a time!!!!

Hello,
I'm so glad you all are here. I found this site several months ago when I was looking for Daily Readings but this is my first post. My name is Kathi, from Tampa, FL, and I am a chronic relapser

I manage to get 9 mos, a year, even a little over a year, and then I blow it by using. In fact, I just relapsed, and just got out of jail, AGAIN, after nearly 10 mos clean.

So, here I go again. Trying to get back on track. I used to be so hopeful for another chance, confident that this time, I would get it right. Not feeling confident though this time. I have faith in God, but not in myself. Oh, I'm good for at least another 9 mos to a year or so, but I'm sure I will screw everything up. That's what I always do. I don't like being negative but that's my reality.

In the meantime, I am committing myself to recovery and grateful for yet another chance. Thanks for being here.

MajestyJo
10-02-2014, 08:04 PM
Welcome Kathi, so glad you are here. There is a lot of recovery material here. It doesn't matter what substance you used, by now, I am assuming, that you have found out that the problem is you.

I spent many years pointing the finger at others, until I ran out of people, and all I had left was me, and there wasn't 'me' left. Every time I picked up, I lost a piece of me, and there was a big void. The only thing I could find to fill it was with spiritual food.

Welcome to the journey, just for today, I choose not to use.

Sorry, couldn't find a Falcon.

Hi my name is Ronnie (hippie girl). I'm really struggling. Quit drinking for a year and thought I could handle drinking again. I got drunk again last night!! Feeling the shame and disappointment. Feel like I'm not in control anymore.:/ Glad to be here.

Welcome Hippie Girl. Thank you for signing in and sharing. The fact that you are looking for control and wanting to be in control would be the key, we need to surrender to the program and to the God of our understanding in order to win over this disease of addiction. Control is an illusion. It is already out of control if we have to control it. When we surrender and turn it over, we are empowered to do what we need to do each day to stay clean and sober each day.

It is a one day at a time program. It isn't forever. It isn't for a year or a month or even 3 months or ten years. It is just for today, I choose not to use.

It is a program of suggestions (go to meetings, get a home group, get a sponsor, work with others, work and apply the steps, take your program out of the rooms of recovery and apply it to your daily life at home, at work and in the community), or you will go back to where you came from, and for me, that was not an option. For me, that was not an option. For me, to use is to die.

All you have lost is your dry date. It is up to you as to whether you want to lose more. You said you thought you could handle drinking again. I am sorry that gave me a little smile. It was my thoughts that got me to the doors of recovery in the first place.

Hope you will choose to stay. It is not easy, but it is so much better than going back there.

My name is Sandy. I have the disease of alcoholism to the bone, and God has graced me with recovery. Without others who know it's power, I know that without my God and AA I would not "be" today. I humbly thank you all.

Indeed it is, I know I went through a living hell detoxing alone in my room at the YWCA for 5 days. I didn't know about AA and detox, and so grateful that they had a social worker back then that got me into a recovery house, which introduced me to the 12 Step programs. Endorse yourself! We do this one day at a time. Just for today, I choose not to use.

Thanks for sharing Rachel.

Thanks for sharing. I was told in treatment, "The body manufactures the pain to tell you that you need more." Yet don't let the people in the program play doctor, sometimes we do need medications, just because it is a pill doesn't mean it is wrong. I suffer from depression, but it isn't clinical depression and I don't need a pill for it. I just need to apply my program. Depression is part of grieving and part of withdrawal and detoxing, so many doctors dole out pills, when in fact it is a natural process and we have go through it, for me it was a living hell, but a pill doesn't make it better, it just prolongs things and kept me sick and in denial.

Some medications which are good for others are not good for others, for example, Gravol is something I don't have in my house. I can have it's good uses, but it was my drug of choice when everything else didn't work fast enough. For me it was about being aware and being willing to not go there.

Just for today, I choose not to use.

hello hello!! just checking in. am doing quite well since i went back to meetings 6 mos. ago after being a dry drunk for 11 years, and after having 11 years of a good recovery program, and working it. just celebrated 22 yrs., but keep my white chip with me at all times (the one I picked up for coming back to the meetings) along w/my medallion. just wanted to stop by and say hello, and also ask that prayers be lifted up for Cheryl P. who is on day 13 after being in the program for 20 years. She had a "slip" (S.obriety L.osing I.t's P.riority). She is struggling mightly with detoxing and the Third Step of turning her will and her life over to the care of a Higher Power of her understanding. She is homeless now, (it is cold here in Maine) and looking at some legal charges as well. We women in the program have "circled our wagons" around her without "trying to fix it" at the same time. This is her journey.... but prayers are needed all the same. She's looking into rehab programs, lots of doors and windows are closing it seems, but not many are opening for her at the same time. God's will..... thank you all in advance for your prayers and good thoughts. Namaste to all of you!:lighthouse:

Welcome Randy, congratulations on your one year. You have been through a lot. Surgery can be a real test to our sobriety. Don't let the people in the rooms play doctor and yet be honest with your doctors about being an alcoholic and how pain medication is a form of dried-up alcohol to our bodies. We often need to take it , but under our doctor's and God's Care.

Hi my name is Susan, this is my first day on this site. I am struggling with sobriety . I do use 12 step meetings and for some reason I haven't been able to put more than 8 days clean. I wasn't sobriety more than anything. So that is why I am here today.

Welcome Susan, so glad you found us. So sorry for the late hello, I have been having problems with my computer today.

We do this one day at a time. It is a program of suggestions and I was told, I would only get out of the program, what I put into it. for me, it was do or die. Using was no longer an option. I went to meeting, got a sponsor, got phone numbers, built up a support group, found a home group where I felt comfortable sharing, got temporary sponsor, until covered all the bases. I was an alcoholic in denial, and addict whose drug of choice was more, with an eating disorder, who escaped her reality with men, work, and relationships. Just for today, I choose not to use. I am powerless over people, places, and things. I had to quit pointing the finger and had to let it begin with me.

Hope you will keep coming so you won't have to come back again.

not sure what post or thread this is posting to but want to give and say much encouragement to all who have made it to this website. you have made it here not by accident believe me! big thanks to Majesty Jo for having it here by the way. also, as an update, Cheryl is still struggling, but like most of us, our struggles (at least it is for me), they are self induced. it happens to me when I simply will NOT turn it over and Let Go and Let God (or H.P) :embarrassed: I call myself the "Queen of "Snatch it Back!" (sounds like a game show)... you know... I turn it over and then BAM! I snatch it back, turn it over, BAM! snatch it back...*sigh* I'm still practicing progress not perfection.

thank you to everyone who comes here and shares their experience, strength and hope. I visit as often as I can and get much wisdom from your words. you never know what kind of impact you may have on someone's day, so thank you once again.

Thank you, so true, we can be our own worst enemy at times. As a woman said many years ago, every time I let go, I leave scratch marks. When we do that, it take a long time to heal. We tend to forget that scars go much deeper than what we see on the surface. We have places that only God can reach.

Grateful to be here today. Randy, my prayers are with you. God is using you as an amazing example of sobriety. Thank you so much. India....i slipped after 12 years and ive been blessed with 1913 days of a quality of sobriety i wouldn't trade for the world. Cheryl can make it back. Some of us get to relapse so that others dont have to. I worked a solid program for 10 years. For one year i worked the lopsided triangle and did service only and hence my 3 month slip that ended in homelessness, NO one who cared (enabled me....lol), non stop drinking and using and finally 5150. I even gave my kids that had never seen me drink to their very sick and drunk dad. Didnt pick up where i left off. It was as if I'd never stopped. I guess thats why theres a triangle, not a line. Unity, service and recovery....oh yeah. Point being......i made it back. I'm praying for Cheryl to come home soon. And thank you for coming home without a relapse. Proof that we don't have to drink no matter what. You are an angel. Thank you. Sorry bout my lil speaker meeting. You all just touched me so much. A happy Thanksgiving to all. You are true miracles and i am blessed to share in your lives. God bless.

Thank you for sharing. I too got caught up in service and came to realize that I had to find balance. The program doesn't stop at Step 12, it is a continuing growth pattern and as a friend says, "I am always a newcomer." I remain open to learning and I stop thinking I know it all and each day is a spiritual quest.

I just joined this forum. I am a recovering addict and alcoholic since 1988. I had to go on anti depressants in 2006 due to a depression brought about by the menopause. Since then I have been on and off them and obsessing about them and alternative therapies to make me feel better. However 9 months ago I decided just to take the medication and not think about it. The doctor has given me Diazapam on a few occasions and now I want to take it all the time. I am prescribed to take it 2.5mgs when I feel I need to. Lately I've started to obsess about this drug and fight not to take it for the wrong reasons. That and painkillers with codeine. I think about the painkillers a lot but don't buy them. they have 30mgs of codeine - now I don't know if I have a problem or I am making a problem up for myself. that's what I do. I make problems and issues out of nothing. My marriage is in the process of breaking up, I have a severely autistic mentally retarded son and my mother died last week. I am the bread winner in the family that is breaking up and I feel bitter and angry about that and struggle there too

Welcome to the site Nools. Thank you for signing in and sharing. I was told when I went into recovery, that the body manufactures the pain and tells us that we need more.

I would suggest you talk to your doctor and your sponsor. A drug is a drug, no matter what shape or form it takes. Don't play doctor with your life. I am going to my doctor's today because he put me on a medication for my tremon disorder, I do not like how it makes me feel, I find it to be mind altering and have been having head aches and I want to come off of it, and yet, I don't want to have the tremons so bad that I can't operate and help myself.

They have tried me on many anti-depressants and I just can't take the side affects and the weight gain and refuse to take them. I have been on over 10 different kinds. I have been on two Alprazolam 0.25 mg a day, for my muscles, not my nerves for years, I don't abuse them, but they are the only thing that works for me for my Fibromyalgia.

I was addicted to them, and abused them along with many other things for years. There are days when I don't take the two. I only take them to relax the muscles so that when I lie down, my muscles don't scream and cause me a lot of pain. I use to hate going to bed and lying down and developed bad sleeping habits. Only you can decide, but I would suggest you get honest with your doctor.

I read your post Nools and wanted to share my experience , Strength and hope with you for what ts worth . I've been sober a few 24 hours and I am approaching 53 and have suffered with this menopause for a few years . I couldn't believe how powerful the hormones are . I was up front and honest with my doctor and she did suggest antidepressants - I hesitated for a long time because of my upbringing in the rooms and so many old ideas . Through prayer and support from others I realized its medically necessary fir for my mental state . I've been on Wellbutrin 150 for a while and I'm ok with it . Of course my alcoholic mind tells me I don't need them anymore and stop taking them . I will iif and when along with my doctors care through that process . I guess what I'm saying is " to thine own self be true " talk to your sponsor and your individual network . That's not something I talk about at group level . Keep Tudging

Welcome to the site Vicki, so glad you signed in to say hello. Thank you for sharing your experience, strength and hope. I am glad they worked for you, they do for some people, they didn't work for me. They tell me I shouldn't take my medication, but it is the only thing that works for me and I don't misuse and abuse it.

It is so important that we don`t play doctor with our own life and with the life of others. What is good for one may not be good for someone else. I had lunch with a lady today. She is a new neighbor and we exchanged phone numbers. She talked about her medication and arthritis and she said that she became aware that when they took away her Tyenol 3s and told her to take Extra-Strength Tyenol, she took more. I share with her, the body manufactures the pain to tell you that you need more. I know for me, more was never enough. I found myself with a resentment and hurt that my doctor prescribed pills for me, without discussing the matter with me first. This is the third time he has done this, written the script, and faxed it to the pharmacy. I didn`t know what it was until I picked it up and refused the medication when I went to pick it up. His words were, I will get you something that will fix you all up. I am hoping I won`t have to change doctor`s again. He is my third doctor in recovery.

Looking forward to sharing with you.

Welcome New Life and Kenan, so glad you both found us and made the decision to join our family. Hope you will both continue to come and share your journey with us.

New life, I don't think it is a qualification. I personally have a tremon disorder and to make my hands STOP shaking, all I have to do is pick up a drink. How ironic is that?

Good morning!

Just popping in to say hey. Been visiting the page for a while now . This place is a miracle, Correction - it is many miracles in one place. It continues to save my life and propel my recovery. Many months ago I prayed for a single source for my prayer and meditation. I was looking for substance and something that would stretch my soul. The God of my understanding is never cheap. He gifts me beyond measure every single time. The cup really does run over!

Briefly, I've been an alcoholic for many years and went cold turkey after being pulled over one night on a dirt road in the middle of the night. A very sobering experience to say the least, I'm presently in another addiction program and enjoy sponsoring and helping people make strides in recovery.

I am feeling especially isolated right now. I have many health issues, and I'm also a caregiver for my partner and mom. Down time is rare at times, and i get stretched thin. Self-care, self-care!

Would you do me a favor? If there's something I can do to make your journey easier, would you touch base with me? It would mean a lot to me. Feels good to feel useful, you know?

Y'all have a wonder-filled day :)

Peace!

Welcome ljportelli, sorry I haven't been here to greet you. I have been isolated as a result of my own health issues, and it has been difficult not being able to be on the boards to share. Even my meditation cards told me to connect and share with others. I am fortunate that I have had a couple of friends to share with while I haven't been able to be here as well as my sponsor.

The material on the site has been here for me, new and old. I just have to reach out and look for it. It is surprising how I can go to a section, click on a post and what I need to hear and see is there waiting to speak to me.

Hope you will be able to continue to come and share your journey with us.

This promise is the result of working the steps.
If you want what we have and are willing to go to any lengths. .. hey a sponsor... who has working knowledge of the big book. ..

I would like to hear what people do besides think about alcohol and not drinking. What hobbies are people involved in? What none alcohol related books are you reading. I have been wood carving off and on since I first got sober 1988. I had a lapse in sobriety for 5 yrs but have been sober since 2011. Is there a thread for hobbies and showing what people are do with their time.

Thanks for sharing, I went back to playing bridge. Sadly, because of my disability, I didn't think I could be a good partner, so haven't played for almost 4 years.

For me it has been reading, have read for years. I read a lot of recovery material and then I heard a woman say, "I relapsed because I was looking outside of myself and the program. I read every self-help book I could get my hands on. I came back to recovery and found that everything I needed in the Big Book of AA."

I am an avid curling and tennis follower. Not an active participant, just a couch potato when the games come on TV. My favourite player was Stefan Edberg from Sweden and now he is coaching Andy Murray from England. Now we have our own Canadian hopefuls, who hopefully will come into their own in the coming years.

I like Glen Howard's team, although he didn't qualify this year. He plays out of the arena of my old home town Coldwater, Ontario. Our women's champion is from Ottawa, which isn't too far from me and I have been there, so it is a little link that I have to the game and the people in it.

I use to play darts. I was an avid player and a good player. I had 9 trophies for high double ins and outs, most double ins and outs. My arthritis got so bad that the dart no longer sticks in the board. I went through a grieving process because I could no longer play a game I loved. I had a board in my home. I didn't like going to the bars to continue playing when I got sober. I couldn't stand the noise in the room after 10 p.m., I guess that means I am getting old. It isn't a safe place to be, but there was no reason to not get with friends to play cards, to play darts, or play board games.

I use to paint, but I have a tremon disorder and can no longer do that. I use to like colouring in colouring books. I found it helped ease stress.

I played several games on the internet, but now all I do is play Bejewelled 3. I have a link on my desk top, it takes me to the game, I don't interact with others, I just play the game, whether I get 3,000, 30,000, 300,000 or over 3M. It became an addiction, and I had to turn it over to my Higher Power. It is no longer an obsession. It is just a game I play at night before I got to bed, when I want to take a time out from what I am doing, and it seems to ground me. It is okay as long as I don't let it piss me off and laugh instead of cuss when I crash at a small score. It is about me and my attitude and what I bring to the occasion. Just like all things in life.

As long as I don't become compulsive and obsessive about something, it is good. I use to call myself a bridgeaholic. I love cribbage. When I first learned, if someone sat down, they found a crib board in front of them. The program is applicable to all areas of my life.

I am 42, raised in a dysfunctional split house, which I lay no burden on. I was truly loved, my father died when I was as 7 and although the visits were not regular, my father's dad loved me, I felt it to my bones every time he hugged me and I saw it in the tears every time he walked away. My issues were in his absence. I started drinking at 10ish, had my first beer with a family member by 12, we are German/polish and alcohol was part of ever family function. Fast forward... I have always maintained my career. I am a functional alcoholic. I recently quit drinking for 9 months, them... I went for a ride without my colors, I can not drink while wearing my colors, it is forbidden. And I would not stop at my old biker bar hang outs unless I was on my bike. You know the rest, those 2 beers led to 2 months of solid drinking. Then I reached out to some brothers, and bam, I was sober again... Now here I am on vacation, and the condo we have rented has one locked door, I start to think about what is behind that door. Wow, so easy to open, so I do... There sits a half gallon of kettle one, and without a second of thought I am chugging it down. I am a beast among beasts, I fear no one. But I am so weak....

Welcome clundy1, richieboo, and Cedeines. So glad you signed in and shared with us. Hope you will keep coming to the site. The key to recovery is H.O.W. Honesty, Open Mindedness and Willingness. I often have to pray for the willingness to be willing.

I had to get honest about my disease, I had to be open minded and recognize that my way didn't work, my way brought me to where I am in today. I had to be willing to change. I had to be willing to do whatever it took to stay clean and sober.

I have a disease, the problem is me. The drugs and alcohol are but a symptom of my disease. I have an allergy, I don't metabolize things the way 'normal' do and I have a mind that is obsessive/compulsive. It is a disease that say "This time will be different." It also tells me that I don't have a disease. I looked at it as dis-ease, not comfortable in my own skin, not wanting to be me, always looking outside of myself for SOMETHING/ANYTHING that will make me feel better. I internalized my feelings and drugs and alcohol helped me to cope with life. Today, just for today, I choose not to use people, places, and things.
