God's Word For Today
Deep Roots
Read Jeremiah 15:1 through 17:27
The oak tree has an intricate root system. Deep taproots, reaching to depths of four feet underground, absorb water and nutrients for the tree while other roots are formed. Thick lateral roots grow out from the taproot, stabilizing the tree. Then small, fibrous roots grow from the lateral roots. This intricate system not only gives the oak tree its majestic stability, it also helps it survive seasons of drought.
“But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit” (Jeremiah 17:7–8).
When we place our trust in circumstances or our abilities, we will be quickly overcome when adversity strikes. When we trust in God, we are better able to withstand the dry seasons of our lives. By making sure God is our source, we will not only live through the drought, we will continue to bear fruit.
Prayer Suggestion: God, help me to put my trust and confidence in You.
