Giving and Receiving
James 4:6 “But [God] gives us more grace.” God gives, we receive. God offers to us, we take.
God transfers to us and we possess. We need not strive to control how, when, or where we receive, we have only to accept.
Why is it so difficult for some of us to receive? Could it be because when we are the givers we remain in control? Learning to give and receive helps us develop into balanced and healthy people. We reduce some of our anxiety when we loosen our grip and gratefully accept the daily gifts God offers us, many through our fellow human beings.
The following practical exercises may encourage you in the process of learning to acknowledge God’s blessings and receive without shame or obsession. For the next month, each time you hear a Bible verse, listen for examples of God’s benevolent nature. Or starting today make a mental list of the gifts in your life. What brings you comfort? Who causes you to smile? What new insight have you gained lately?
It is God’s generous and gracious nature to give. You and I are blessed to receive.
Lord God, today I will open my heart and hand
to accept all that you have for me.
Please sharpen my mind and spirit to be gratefully aware.
