Eyes to See
Read 1 Samuel 16:1 through 17:58
“The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7).
When Paul Potts ambled onto the stage of ITV’s Britain’s Got Talent, the UK version of American Idol, the judges quirked their mouths and sighed. Surely this ill-dressed cell phone salesman with crooked teeth was wasting their time.
“What are you here for today, Paul?” the lady judge asked.
Mr. Potts answered nervously, “To sing opera.”
A second judge looked up. “Okay. Ready when you are.”
The music began, and a miracle happened. Out of Mr. Potts’s soul proceeded a voice that defied description. A voice that sang with the passion of one who had suffered rejection yet continued to press on. Tears pricked the eyes of the judges. The audience burst into applause, cheering wildly as they caught a glimpse of Paul Potts’s soul.
Fortunately for us, God penetrates the outer man to read the inner man. As His children, let us purpose, as far as possible, to do likewise.
Thought for Today: Dare to look beyond the outward appearance of those who cross your path.
