As newcomers many of us fear Step 5 because of the anticipated embarrassment that we think about that goes along with revealing ourselves to others. Be that as it may, it's not the goal of step 5 but the means by which we achieve it. What's happened to us all up to this point is we're playing God. None of us set out to do this; it happens as part of the illness and this step unravels that. It's not that I told anything about myself that made me so much different than anyone else, it was that I admitted that I am human. All of us have avoided doing this before now because of not wanting to feel shame. Then what happens is we start to see ourselves in an unrealistic way almost like we can't do anything wrong. We may even know we were doing this but are unable to do anything about it. As it progressed others could see that we were doing this. We will be freed from having to play god by taking step 5 and the embarrassment we pay is well worth it. Because the relief we get from no longer having to do this is amazing and the shame that we thought we were avoiding in the first place is gone. Poof just like that.
