The guy who helped me get into recovery was in no way perfect. In fact I sensed there was plenty wrong with him, but for some weird reason he was wanting to help me and I couldn't understand why. I really didn't know him all that well, but by the things he was saying it was as if somehow he cared about me which seemed odd, because I had stopped caring about anything or anyone long ago including myself. What he was saying was having a profound effect on me, and my drinking. Somehow I sensed that he was doing all this for another reason. Maybe for himself I didn't know, I wasn't sure. After I got sober and started to work the steps I learned how to do the same thing. To pass along the message that we are worth it, even after we have stopped caring for ourselves, and that by giving that message to someone else we are helping ourselves in ways that we couldn't otherwise do.
