PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REST
There are many people in this world who don’t get enough rest. Possibly people in our own homes. Possibly us. We tend to be people who are always busy. We may not be busy with things that are important but we are always doing something. Our busyness may not be productive but it is keeping us from rest. To stay alert and awake, we need both physical and mental rest.
God mentions rest in the Bible because it is important to Him. If it is important to Him, it should be important to us. When we go to God, He will give us rest from our worries. When He gives us rest from our troubles, then we can move away from the busyness of attempting to fix things ourselves and truly rest. Rest refreshes. Rest brings peace. Rest is what we need every day. When we take time to rest physical and mentally, we are obeying and pleasing God.
SCRIPTURE: Matthew 11:28 “Then Jesus said, ‘Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.’” (NLT)
ACTION STEPS:
1. List some troubles that keep you from true rest.
2. Write out what things you do rather than getting the rest you need.
3. Pray asking God to take your burdens and your worries.
4. Take time to rest and know God is in control.
PRAYER:
Dear Lord, we know we tend to do to many things. We are going here and there. We are searching the social networks and playing games online late into the night. We are trying to find ways to relax and forget about our problems but we are going down the wrong avenues because we are focusing on the world to help us rather than coming to You. Today, Lord, we come to You to give us rest. We lay down our burdens and ask You to take them from us so we can rest. We want to obey You and please You and we can’t do that if we continue to stay busy and attempt to fix our own issues. Help us today, Lord, we pray. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
REMEMBER:
Our burdens and worries keep our minds and bodies from getting the rest we need. We need to give them to God.
God created us to work but He also wants us to take time to rest as He did.
Exodus 23:12a “You have six days each week for your ordinary work, but on the seventh day you must stop working.” (NLT)
When we take time to rest, we will be refreshed and better ready for our next day of work.
It pleases God when we take time to rest because when we do, we are living in obedience to Him.
God has the ability to give us the rest we need when we go to Him.
FOCUS: Jeremiah 31:25 “For I have given rest to the weary and joy to the sorrowing.” (NLT)
When we go to God and give Him our burdens, He will give us rest.
