Though I have heard it was a made-up name and really didn't have a specific meaning, but people ascribe different meanings to it. I was given this name in 1959 -- looks as if it was most popular in the 50's. I have met more Cheryl's in Pittsburgh than in California. In California it is pronounced Cher - url
In Pittsburgh, they tend to pronounce it Shirl.

At any rate, I know I am a beloved child of God and He has also miraculously saved me from myself!
